Virtual Planning and 3D Printing Unit of Hospital Universitario Río Hortega
The Virtual Planning and 3D Printing Unit of Hospital Universitario Río Hortega has over eight years of consolidated experience in the in-house manufacturing of biomodels for clinical use. Since September 2025, the Unit holds the Custom-Made Medical Device Manufacturer License granted by the Regional Government of Castilla y León. It is fully integrated within the hospital and is supported by a multidisciplinary team including medical leadership, industrial engineering, biomedical engineering, and specialized technical staff. The Unit is equipped with comprehensive SLA and FDM printing infrastructure, 3D scanning capabilities, and dedicated post-processing stations for both biocompatible and non-biocompatible materials. It maintains strong scientific activity, including doctoral theses, peer-reviewed publications, and presentations at national and international conferences. In addition, the Unit has a solid teaching track record through accredited training courses in 3D printing applied to surgery, enabling it to contribute proven expertise, technical capacity, and regulatory rigor to the Hub.
